Editorial Independence Policy

Purpose
This policy ensures that What’s Up Worcester News, Inc. maintains full editorial independence and integrity in all content we produce, publish, or distribute. Our mission is to inform, engage, and empower the people of Worcester through fair, accurate, and community-centered journalism.
Commitment to Independence
What’s Up Worcester’s editorial decisions are made solely by our newsroom team and are not influenced by donors, sponsors, board members, advertisers, or political interests.
We are accountable to the public we serve — not to those who fund us.
All journalists, editors, and contributors at What’s Up Worcester are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethical reporting, maintaining fairness, accuracy, and transparency in all work.
Funding and Influence
- We accept financial support from individuals, foundations, and sponsors who align with our mission; however, funding does not grant influence over our editorial content or decisions.
- Donors, advertisers, and sponsors do not review, approve, or edit stories before publication.
- Editorial judgment on story selection, framing, and presentation remains entirely with the editorial staff, led by the Editor-in-Chief.
- We disclose all significant donors who contribute more than $5,000 annually to maintain public trust and transparency.
Role of the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of What’s Up Worcester provides strategic, financial, and governance oversight, but it does not participate in day-to-day editorial decision-making.
Board members may be consulted for their expertise or community insight, but cannot influence story content, tone, or coverage priorities.
Corrections and Accountability
We commit to correcting errors promptly and transparently when they occur.
If a factual error or inaccuracy is identified, we will publish a correction or clarification promptly, noting the change clearly for our readers.
Public Trust
Our goal is to build and preserve trust with our community through independent, inclusive, and ethical journalism.
We welcome feedback from our readers and strive to represent the diverse perspectives of Worcester’s residents.
Policy Adoption
