Worcester Health Officials and Youth Lead Sticker Shock Campaign to Address Underage Drinking

By Jerry Filmore
WORCESTER, MA — The City of Worcester recently completed a Sticker Shock Campaign aimed at reducing underage access to alcohol, according to the Worcester Division of Public Health.
The initiative was led by the Worcester Division of Public Health in partnership with the Division of Youth Opportunities and the Worcester Police Department. City officials describe the campaign as part of a broader effort to address underage drinking, substance use, and youth wellbeing through a combination of education, enforcement, and community engagement.
Sticker Shock campaigns are recognized as an evidence-based prevention strategy. The approach involves placing visible warning labels directly on alcohol products to remind adults that providing alcohol to individuals under the age of 21 is illegal. The messaging also encourages retailers to consistently check identification and highlights potential legal, financial, and health consequences associated with underage drinking.
According to the Division of Public Health, seven youth volunteers participated in the Worcester campaign. During the event, volunteers placed more than 250 warning stickers at three retail locations across the city: East Side Discount Liquors on Shrewsbury Street, Highland Liquors on Highland Street, and Mass Liquors on Chandler Street.

City officials stated that these locations were selected to reach multiple neighborhoods and expand the campaign’s visibility across Worcester. The effort also included direct engagement between youth participants and local retailers.
The Division of Public Health noted that youth volunteers played an active role in delivering prevention messaging and supporting the campaign’s outreach. Officials described the involvement of young people as central to the initiative’s approach to community-based public health work.
