Worcester Public Schools Launches Grow Your Own Educator Program at Worcester State University
By Jerry Filmore

Worcester Public Schools has begun the first cycle of its Grow Your Own Program, a new student-to-teacher pathway designed to prepare Worcester high school students for future careers in education. The program officially launched in January at Worcester State University, where participating students are taking early college coursework.
The Grow Your Own Program is intended to support students interested in education by offering college-level learning and hands-on experience while they are still in high school. According to Worcester Public Schools, the goal is to build a local pipeline of future educators who are familiar with and connected to the Worcester community.
“This program is an investment in Worcester’s future,” said Brian E. Allen, Superintendent of Worcester Public Schools, in a statement announcing the program’s launch. Allen noted that the initiative is designed to support local students pursuing teaching careers and to strengthen the district’s future workforce.
As part of the program’s first phase, students are enrolled in Introduction to Teaching at Worcester State University. The course introduces participants to college-level academic expectations while offering an overview of the teaching profession. Worcester Public Schools reports that the coursework is paired with opportunities for skill development through classroom-based and enrichment experiences.
The Grow Your Own Program is overseen by the Worcester Public Schools Division of Personnel, Equity, and Engagement. District officials state that participating students will have access to early college education courses and experiential learning opportunities intended to prepare them to return to Worcester Public Schools in the future as educators.
Worcester Public Schools describes the initiative as part of an ongoing collaboration with Worcester State University. District officials say the partnership is aimed at expanding educational pathways for students while addressing long-term staffing needs in urban school districts.
Additional details about program enrollment, eligibility criteria, and future expansion have not yet been released and are pending official confirmation.
